Earthy taste to water from Cooks Dam and Agnes River

Toora, Welshpool, Port Welshpool and Port Franklin residents may be aware of an earthy taste to their water.

We’re working to resolve this issue, and wanted to reassure all residents that the water remains safe to drink and use.

The earthy taste is a result of summer conditions, when water bodies have high levels of nutrients and the hot, sunny conditions can produce algae, which can in turn change the taste and smell of water.

We carefully  manage our water supplies to ensure they are safe to drink. Whenever we find a change in our water supplies, we increase monitoring and our treatment processes. We have done this at Cooks Dam and Agnes River.
