WATER SECURITY FOR KORUMBURRA, POOWONG, LOCH & NYORA

The Lance Creek Water Connection is a key Victorian Government project with a contribution of $30M in Government funds to secure the water supply needs of Korumburra, Poowong, Loch and Nyora over the next 50 years.

It has ensured that water security replaces water restrictions for these townships, provide a dependable environment for community development, economic growth and future investment within the region.

The early completion of the pipeline, South Gippsland Water’s largest infrastructure project, was the culmination of many years of dedicated planning and construction.

A total of 30.5km of new pipeline was installed as part of the project: 21.7km Lance Creek to Korumburra and 8.8km Korumburra to Poowong.

The pipeline transfers an average of 2.6ML of water per day (the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool) from Lance Creek to Korumburra. A second pump station at Korumburra transfers around 800KL per day to Poowong for Poowong, Loch and Nyora customers.

The Lance Creek Water Supply System provides access to 4,200ML water from Lance Creek Reservoir and up to 1,000ML per year entitlement from the Melbourne Supply System.

The combination of these systems will secure water supply for the area and minimise the likelihood of staged water restrictions for these townships in the future. The degree of blending of water from both systems will be influenced by time of year, reservoir levels and treatment processes.

Commissioning of the pipeline has resulted in the Lance Creek Water Supply System delivering an average of 8 million litres of water per day to around 60% of South Gippsland Water’s customer base (Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Cape Paterson, Korumburra, Poowong, Loch and Nyora).

NEW WATER SUPPLY – FLUORIDATION & CHLORAMINATION

Water distributed by the Lance Creek Water Treatment Plant will be chloraminated and fluoridated to ensure customers are supplied with drinking water that meets world-class standards and Department of Health regulations.

This treatment process is new for Korumburra, and whilst fluoridation is new for Poowong, Loch and Nyora, customers in these three townships are well-used to a chloraminated water supply.

Some residents may notice a slight change in the water’s taste and smell compared to what they’ve been used to. Customers are also welcome to call the South Gippsland Water Customer Service Team on 1300 851 636 with any enquiries.

Aquarium owners please note that chloraminated tap water needs to be treated before it is added to fish tanks. Local pet shops, vets or aquarium retailers are able to provide futher information about treatment options.

RETHINKING RESERVOIRS

Planning for the next and final stage of the Lance Creek Water Connection has begun – looking at options to recycle the reservoirs.

As the Lance Creek Water Connection, progresses South Gippsland Water are now looking to the community to assist in determining the future use of the reservoirs that have historically supplied water to Korrumburra, Poowong, Loch and Nyora. Read more…

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Lance Creek Water Connection is a Victorian Government project delivered by South Gippsland Water to secure the water supply needs of Korumburra, Poowong, Loch and Nyora over the next 50 years.

Current catchment yields in these areas will reduce over time and will not meet the region’s future demand for water.

The project will result in the Coalition Creek Water Supply System (Korumburra) and the Little Bass Water Supply System (Poowong, Loch and Nyora) being connected to Lance Creek Reservoir, South Gippsland Water’s largest supply system, which is also connected to the Melbourne Water Supply System, including Cardinia Reservoir and the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant.

This 3-year project is a priority in South Gippsland Water’s long-term strategy to secure water supply for the region. The infrastructure installed as part of the project will also allow for the future connection of Leongatha to the network.

The project will provide a dependable environment for community development, economic growth and future investment.
