Storage, River Flow and Rainfall Update

Rainfall recorded at South Gippsland Water’s storages during the week of 3rd – 9th August 2019 was Lance Creek 38mm, Ruby Creek 30mm, Deep Creek 20mm and Battery Creek 29mm.

South Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Philippe du Plessis said, “Following good rainfall across the region, three out of four reservoirs are at 100% capacity and, although at 85%, Leongatha’s Ruby Creek system is where we would expect it for this time of year.”

Catchments are now well saturated and the percentage of runoff to reservoirs has increased. In an open catchment system, however, while increased inflow improves water levels, it can also result in additional sediment and debris making its way into raw water storages.

“Our water quality and operations staff test and monitor all South Gippsland Water supplies as part of routine operations,” explained Mr du Plessis. “The treatment and processing of raw water is adapted to contend with the changing conditions within each catchment, ensuring drinking water always meets state and national regulations.”

With reliable water quality and storages in good shape, it is still important for all customers to be mindful of their water-use. Even though it is winter, South Gippsland Water encourages customers to use water efficiently throughout the entire year.
